Take A Virtual Tour of Bicycle Garage Indy North

By: Monday, November 26, 2012

We recently had a local photography company come through and shoot a virtual photo of Bicycle Garage Indy North.  We think the results are pretty cool, and you can see end product our North Store Photo Tour page, and below.

The virtual tour is first photographed using a wide angle lens on a digital camera, on a tripod mounted accessory that controls the rotaion of the camera.  For Bicycle Garage Indy North, the tripod was moved dozens of tiems for different points of view.  The final collection of picture is then "stiched" together creating the final image that is viewable in a web browser.  Our thanks to You Are Here Photography for a doing such a great job on this project.

Lock for complete tours of BGI Downtown (in the Indy Bike Hub YMCA) and Bicycle Garage Indy South (just west of I65 on County Line Rd, Greenwood) over the next couple of weeks.

Cranksgiving: Bicycle food drive in Indy this Sunday

By: Wednesday, November 14, 2012

What is it? Cranksgiving Indy is a fun, unique new bike event that is part bike ride, scavenger hunt, food drive, tour of downtown Indy.

Riders will be given the locations of places in and around downtown Indianapolis where they will ride and purchase food items.  Locations are not announced in advance and there is no predetermined route – or even an order in which you must follow.  Best we can tell, you’ll be riding ~15 miles – but that is up to you!  Your mission is to figure out the best route to these locations, purchase the food item specified and bring your bounty of nourishment to the start/finish area safely.

Cranksgiving will be Sunday November 18  from 10 am - 3 pm, with the Start/Finish location at the Rathskeller Biergarten at the Athenaeum, 401 E. Michigan Street, downtown Indianapolis.36

For more details go to the Active Indy Tours website: http://activeindytours.com/events/cranksgivingindy/

Nathan Smurdon, the Cranksgiving organizer and CEO (Chief Exploration Officer) of Active Indy Tours,  also is looking for volunteers (that info is listed below). Contact Nathan directly by email or cell 317-520-2914 if you're interested in volunteering.

Fred Evans book signing at Bicycle Garage Indy North

By: Monday, September 10, 2012

Fred Evans was a healthy athlete who could complete 100-mile century rides on his bicycle in under 5 hours. Then one day he learned he had prostate cancer. His book "Surviving Cancer" recounts his ride through the ups and downs of dealing with that diagnosis and how he relied on family, friends, faith—and his bicycle—to see him through to become a cancer survivor.

You can meet Fred Evan's  and learn more about his experience on Sunday, September 30,  at 1 pm at Bicycle Garage Indy North (Dean Road at 82nd Street, Indianapolis).

During this event Fred will will available for author's comments, questsion and answers, and book signing.

You can register online for this no-charge event at: www.bgindy.com/for/evansbook

Fred's Bio: Fred Evans has ridden over 170,000 miles—that’s on a bicycle, not in a car. In 1986 and 1987, Fred was on loan from his executive position with Eli Lilly to the Pan American Games Organizing Committee, where he served as Vice President of the Competition Division and Co-Chairman of the Games and Venue Division. In 1981, he led the effort to have the newly built Velodrome in Indianapolis named for Marshall “Major” Taylor, a native of Indianapolis and the first Black world champion in any sport. Fred worked for 30 years in the financial division of Eli Lilly and Company. This book deals with surviving prostate cancer through laughter and faith. Having a loving wife, family, friends and prayers has been vital to his survival.

Look for BGI Tent at the Mass Ave Crit

By: Thursday, August 9, 2012

The Mass Ave Crit is one of Indy's largest competive cycling events, coming up this Saturday, August 11. The folks at NUVO, the Cultral Trail and the entire Mass Ave Distirct hope you will come down for a day of exciting racing in the heart of Indy.

Watch The Racing:  Criterium bike racing can be very exciting to watch in person. Whereas Tour de France spectators get to see the racers once along a long road route, criterium fans see the racers every minute or so as they complete dozens of short circuits (laps). Racing lasts most of the day. See the Mass Ave Criterium Website for details.

Visit The Mass Ave District: The "Mass Ave." district offers dining, shopping, arts, and more. Visit bgindy.com/for/MassIndyAve to see the directory, which shows over 30 shops, over 50 restaurants, and more places of interest.

Say "Hi" To Bicycle Garage Indy Downtown staff: At BGI's tent, we'll have fun challenges for you to participate in:
*** Change a inner tube *** Handlebar wrapping *** Trivia questions ***
Stop by the tent for special offers, learn new skills and find out about Bicycle Garage Indy's clinics, classes, rides, special events and other activities. We'll be located in Barton Park- near where Pedal & Park will be set up.

Breaking Away Film: After the races, stay for the Movie in the Park - the Indiana bicycling classic "Breaking Away" will be shown at 9:30pm after the last race and award ceremony in Davlan Park (site of the beer garden).

Go By Bike: The folks from Pedal & Park will be there to offer secure bicycle parking, just north of E. Michigan and Mass Ave, in Barton Park.

And while you are the crit,  be sure to visit the Indy Bike Hub YMCA, home of Bicycle Garage Indy Downtown. The Indy Bike Hub YMCA is Indy’s (and the nation’s) unique bicycle & fitness resource.  Both are just a few blocks away in the Indianapolis City Market.

Work to begin on new off-road biking trailhead at BGI North

By: Tuesday, June 5, 2012

The entry will be improved for easier access. This week,  Alex Stewart and Alex Harrington of of Spectrum Trail Design will begin building a new off-road bike trail head, creek crossing, and other trail improvments on the river bottom north of Bicycle Garage Indy North.  The completed trail will accessed from the BGI parking lot on 82nd Street in Indianapolis.

Spectrum Trail Design is known for the work on trails at many Indiana State parks, including Fort Benjamin Harrision, Brown County, Versailles and O'Bannon.

Access to the origninal trail was blocked in 2011 by the develompment necessary for the new BGI North.

This project, to be completed by Spectrum Trail Design and BGI staff, is being funded by Cannondale Bicycle.  Earlier this year Cannondal paid for maintenance work and grooming on the 100-year sycamore ("Big Bertha") that rises above BGI North from the bottom land.

if you questions about the trail project, email Tony Simeone of Bicycle Garage Indy.

The creek cross will also be improved on the BGI North Trail
