The next Bicycle Garage Indy Ladies' Night is February 28

By: Monday, February 18, 2013

Join us at Bicycle Garage Indy North on Thursday, February 28,  and be surrounded by dozens of other women for a fun evening. The evening's topic will be "All About Chamois".  We'll have Brendan Gecik from Gore Bike Wear in town to answer all your questions about chamois, including - what is a chamois?.  What is a chamois?  (If you don't know, you definitely should attend this Ladies' Night!)

What is a chamois? Pronounced "Shammy", a chamois is defined as: 1) a small extremely agile goat antelope (Rupicapra rupicapra) of mountainous regions from southern Europe to the Caucasus; 2) a soft pliant leather prepared from the skin of the chamois or from sheepskin;3) a cotton fabric made in imitation of chamois leather.

Brendan will be talking about definitions #2/#3 and how it relates to comfort on the bike.  In his own words, here is Brendan's bio. "I've been riding and racing bikes since 1985, shortly after the bike was invented and right before the advent of suspension. I'm a cyclist first, racer second though. I feel more accomplishment helping others achieve and pulling teammates along than actually going for the win myself. I've raced everything from BMX to 24 Hour Solo Mountain Bike and I have a lot of time in the saddle to speak from. I've worked for GORE Bike Wear for two years and prior spent 12 years as a cycling apparel Buyer at retail so I've seen it all come and go or stay."

4 New Maintenance Classes offered for 2013

By: Monday, January 28, 2013

Bicycle Garage Indy has expanded its Bicycle Maintenance Class offerings to 8 class topics for 2013.  The new classes include an introductory maintenance class, a single-speed bike class, and care of off-road suspension components.   Complete details on the class offerings are available on the Bicycle Garage Indy website.

The new class offerings are:

Our new Bicycle Maintenance 101 class is for any rider who would like to learn basic care for their bicycle, under the "hands-on" guidance of our experienced mechanics. Topics covered will include basic bicycle terminology, wheel removal, flat tire repair, simple adjustments for seats and handlebars, bicycle lubrication and cleaning, and simple road repairs. Time is also allowed for a question and answer period.

Suspension - 301 Fork Lowers Service: This class will cover our lowers service on a Fox or Rockshox suspension fork. You will remove your fork lowers, clean, inspect for wear and install new wipers and oil. We will also cover tuning tips. Early registration is highly recommended as this class has limited attendance. Please let us know ahead of time the year, make and model of your fork for ample time to prepare. Class price does not include the necessary wiper kit or any other parts used.

Suspension - 302 Shock Air Canister Service: This class will cover air canister service on a Fox or Rockshox rear shock. You will remove the shock, disassemble, clean, inspect for wear and install a new seal kit. We will also cover eyelet replacement and tuning tips. Please let us know ahead of time the year, make and model of your shock for ample time to prepare. Class price does not include the necessary seal kit or any parts used.

Single Speed - 303 Basic Maintenance (BGI Downtown only):  Single speed bikes are simple but still require regular maintenance and attention. This class will help you be confident removing and reinstalling your wheels, setting proper chain tension, checking for loose or worn bearings, understanding your headset and identifying the signs of wear in the drive train, brakes and tires. We'll cover the issues that can come from riding in all weather and show you how to properly regularly clean and lubricate your bike.

Like BGI's other four classes, Derailleur and Chain Care-201, Wheel Truing and Hub Service-202, Headset, Bottom Brackets and Cranks-203, and Brake Systems (Non-disc)-204, these classes also are based on the Park Tool Company's Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair.  Classes are offered on Saturday mornings, and you must must register  in advance (link).  A complete schedule (PDF) is available (link). Class fees range from $19.99 to $29.99 per session.

Try a Sprint 8 Workout with Phil Campbell at BGI Fitness

By: Wednesday, January 2, 2013

Looking for a way to really keep a fitness resolution in 2013?  What if you could double your endurance, lose weight and gain fitness in only 20 minutes, three times a week? Sound too good to be true?  Not with SPRINT 8 Exercise Program. Studies have shown that intense 30-second intervals help double endurance in just 2 weeks. (Journal of Applied Physiology, Feb. 10, 2005). More recent studies using SPRINT 8 have shown unbelievable results in weight loss and overall fitness in just 8 weeks.

“SPRINT 8 is like interviewing the body and asking ‘what kind of exercise program should I be doing,’ explains Phil Campbell, creator of SPRINT 8 exercise program, “and the body is screaming at us through new research that when we do SPRINT 8, the body releases the most powerful body fat reducing, energy generating, muscle toning substance known in science -- exercise-induced growth hormone. Our study on middle-aged working adults shows that targeting growth hormone with SPRINT 8 gets twice the results of injecting growth hormone in body fat loss.”

Here are some SPRINT 8 highlights:

- Each workout takes only 20 minutes!
- Effective for all ages and fitness levels
- Naturally releases human growth hormone (your fitness" hormone)
- Cuts body fat and tones muscle
- Reduces wrinkles
- Boosts energy
- Improves speed and performance
- Doubles endurance

The general public is invited to BGI Fitness (Bicycle Garage Indy) on January 9 & 10, 2013, to try out the program with Phil Campbell himself!  Vision Fitness has teamed up with Phil Campbell, to develop an anaerobic SPRINT 8 program found exclusively on select Vision Fitness® treadmills, elliptical trainers and indoor cycles.  The SPRINT 8 workout is perfect for time-crunched adults because it only takes 20 minutes.

BGI Fitness SPRINT 8 Schedule of events:
