Not only has winter arrived, but now the deep freeze is here as well (4 degrees predicted for tomorrow morning). How is the avid cyclist to continue with their training?
Well, if you are like my husband (BGI Marketing Manager, Jay Hardcastle) and his cohorts, you just keep cycling! Their mantra is, “You just have to dress for the weather”. If this sounds like you, then congratulations! You are of hearty stock and do not need to read any further. Instead, read Jay’s recent blog on “Four Ways to Beat the Cold while bicycling”.
But some of us are of a more wimpy breed, choosing instead to turn indoors. In fact we can actually bring our bicycle into the house and clamp it onto a stand, which is called a trainer. I have been doing this for 30 years now and am very happy with this option. If a trainer is new to you, then be aware that they can derive their resistance from wind or magnets or fluid. Cyclops Trainers are the leader in this industry and offer a variety of trainers using all 3 different sources of resistance.
A very different option is to leave your bicycle hanging in the garage, and instead hop onto an indoor cycle. Think stationary bicycle, but with angles and adjustments more in line with your road bicycle. The Cyclops Indoor Cycle rep said it best when he said these cycles are designed to
“fit and feel and ride like your bicycle”.
The beauty of this option is that more than one family member can use this – just a few quick and easy adjustments to customize the bicycle set-up to yourself. I personally just got my first indoor cycle and am curious to compare it this winter to my trainer.
So choose what works best for you and keep on training!
